PPC derives its name from the volcanic ashes of the Pozzuoli volcano in Italy. PPC is value based cement which is produced by grinding the combination of good quality Portland cement clinker, fly ash along with addition of gypsum.
Although Pozzolana does not have cement properties, it forms a strong cementing material (calcium silicate hydrate gel) when exposed to lime (calicum hydroxide) at normal temperature in presence of water.
The PPC makes concrete more impermeable and denser as compared to Ordinary Portland Cement and is stronger in the long term. It produces less heat of hydration and offers greater resistance to the attack of aggressive waters than normal Portland Cement. Moreover it reduces the leaching of calcium hydroxide liberated during the setting and hydration of cement.
